The Pioneer Bar is known for its colorful history as Lou LaMoore's combination bar, brothel and bootlegging concern during Prohibition for the benefit of troops stationed at nearby Fort William H. Seward. Today, it is a contemporary, vibrant place where people share a drink, shoot pool, watch sporting events, unleash their talents at Open Mic Night, dance to music by bands from all around the world, and, most importantly, have a good time.

It all started with a bamboo curtain in 1953 to separate it from the The Pioneer Bar, which was purchased in 1953 by Marty Tengs, an iron worker who moved from Eugene, Oregon to Alaska in 1940. Owned and operated by Marty’s daughter Christy and her husband Bob Fowler since 1991, the Bamboo Room Restaurant is now known far and wide as serving the best halibut fish and chips in Alaska.

HAINES HISTORY

.

Originally constructed in the 1890's, this 7,655 SF building has stories to tell—as the Hotel de France in 1907 specializing in French cuisine, as the well-to-do prostitute Lou LaMoore's Pioneer Beer Parlour that served as a dance hall downstairs and a brothel upstairs beginning in 1933, as the Pioneer Cocktail Lounge in 1943, and eventually as the Pioneer Bar, which was purchased in 1953 by Marty Tengs. Leasing the south side of the building to Fran Fox, she opened a restaurant and called it The Bamboo Room in reference to the bamboo curtain that separated it from the bar. It has been the home and sole business of the Tengs family since 1954. 67 years serving the community of Haines.

The Community.
